John Townsend and Mike the Headless Chicken
Author John Townsend’s early professional life was as a school teacher but finding the quality of the books disappointing he started to write and now has over 140 titles to his name. John is a very engaging and interesting speaker (he’s the sort of teacher you wished for at school). This picture is from a talk he was giving to secondary school students. The chicken (not real, found and purchased on Ebay!) is theatrically decapitated during the talk to illustrate the story of Mike the headless Chicken, an incredibly bird that lived for 18 months without a head and made his owners rich in the process. Mike’s story is featured in John’s Incredible Birds Book and is the sort of engaging science that kids love.
